    A Message from the Superintendent

Yesterday, District staff learned of a disappointing and inappropriate post in the Santa Paula High School yearbook.  The post was in bad taste and hurtful.  The message below from SPHS Principal Ms. Garcia provides an explanation and apology. We apologize for the insensitivity of the post.  It was clearly a lapse of judgment and oversight which is being handled internally.  We are taking steps to ensure this will not occur in future publications.  We certainly appreciate your understanding, patience, and support as we deal with this unfortunate incident.

    Dr. Ed Cora

    Superintendente

    A Message from the Principal

Dear Santa Paula HS Parents, Students and Staff,

As the Principal of Santa Paula High School, I am reaching out to make you aware of an unfortunate situation involving our school yearbook. Sadly, an offensive caption to a photograph was overlooked prior to printing and dissemination. We became aware of this regrettable oversight during late distribution of yearbooks on Thursday, July 9.

This caption and its stereotypical profiling is highly unacceptable and offensive. Its inclusion in the yearbook hurts those in the photo as well as the school community. You have my most sincere apology

that this has occurred. I assure you that this is not who we are at Santa Paula High School. It does not reflect our core values and beliefs as a school.

We are working now to fix the problem. The publishing company is printing a sticker with a replacement photograph that we will place over the offensive caption. If a student has already picked up their yearbook, we need you to drop by the high school on Monday, August 3 between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. We will have an outdoor drive-through area where staff will apply the replacement sticker to your yearbook. If you have not yet received your yearbook, come by during that same time and we will have your yearbook ready for pick-up. If you cannot make it to the campus on this date, email egarcia@santapaulaunified.org, so we can arrange an alternative time.

We are currently looking into how our protocols and editorial review practices failed to discover this egregious error prior to printing and distribution. Upon completion of this review, we will take appropriate steps to deal with the students and staff who were involved in the yearbook’s preparation. We hope this can be a teachable moment for all concerned.

We are also reviewing all of our yearbook procedures and protocols—from the submission of photos and decisions on class surveys to final proofreading and editing—to ensure this does not occur again.

Insensitivity to stereotyping and implicit bias have no place in our school. Our Cardinal Community has a shared responsibility to support each other. Hopefully, we can learn from mistakes and misjudgments in the past and move forward together from this unfortunate incident.

    Sincerely,

    Elizabeth Garcia, Principal

    Santa Paula High School

    Sinceramente,

    Elizabeth García, Directora

    Preparatoria Santa Paula
