Santa Paula Unified School District is proud to offer a broad range of opportunities to ensure students are College and Career ready. Students have a variety of Career Technical Education educational opportunities alongside a system-wide focus on College Readiness.
AVID: Advancement Via Individual Determination
To support college-readiness, SPUSD is an AVID district. AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a program to prepare students for college by closing the achievement gap, preparing students for college readiness and success. Isbell Middle School and Santa Paula High School offer the AVID program, and three elementary schools have become AVID schools in 2017-2018: Blanchard, Grace Thille, and McKevett. Multiple Renaissance High School teachers are AVID trained. Our remaining three elementary sites will become AVID schools for the 2018-2019 school year. Learn more about AVID here, or click on the sidebar in the right column for more details about SPUSD's AVID program and offerings.

Dual Enrollment and Articulation Credit
High School students may opt to enroll in multiple Ventura College courses held on the SPHS campus after normal school hours. Offerings change each semester, and interested students should see their counselor for more information. Select courses during the school day offer articulation credit: this means that a local community college awards credit to SPUSD students who successfully meet the requirements of the colllege level course, the curriculum requirements which are a part of the high school course content. Courses offering articulation credit include:
- Choices: College & Career
- AVID 1
- Introduction to Agriscience, FFA, and Careers
- Introduction to Design and Technical Drafting/CAD
- Medical Terminology
- Honors Digital Media (Fall 2018)
College Entrance Exam Readiness
IMS and SPHS prepare students for college entrance examinations. Students in SPUSD begin to prepare for these examinations at the middle school. The PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) is offered to all grade 8 students at Isbell Middle School, with over 95% participating in 2017-2018. All students school-wide at IMS participate in PSAT math and English practice questions weekly. The PSAT is offered to grade 10 and grade 11 students at SPHS, and multiple offerings of the SAT and ACT are offered on the SPHS campus. More information about the SAT may be found here.
University Visits, Grades 5, 7, 9
SPUSD is committed to ensuring our students experience the opportunity to visit a college or university campus. In 2017-2018, for the first time ever, all grade 5 classes at each of our elementary schools visited university campuses. Grace Thille visited CSU Channel Islands. Bedell, Barbara Webster, Blanchard, Glen City, and McKevett each visited UC Santa Barbara. At UCSB students participated in activites at the Marine Science Institute, walked the bluffs, and visited dormitory rooms. Isbell Middle School students also visited UCSB and the Marine Science Institute. SPHS students visited or soon will visit an array of campuses to include USC and others in our region.
